What is Pump Operator Tools?

Pump Operator Tools is a browser-based training ground for pump operators. It gives you realistic pump scenarios so you can get more reps without booking a truck.

Loss Trainer is the first module in the suite, focused on friction loss and line pressures. More operations-focused trainers are on the way.

  • Runs in a browser – no install, no VPN.
  • Built around realistic line setups and friction loss, not arcade sliders.
  • Perfect for individual practice, homework, or refreshers between live drills.

Designed for

  • Firefighters learning or refreshing pump operations.
  • Captains and officers who want their crew to get more reps.
  • Training officers and academies standardizing their pump curriculum.

Loss Trainer: your digital pump panel

Loss Trainer generates random pump scenarios with 1–4 lines. Each line has its own length, diameter and nozzle. Your job is to use the main discharge and each line’s pressure control to hit the correct pressures within tolerance.

Randomized scenarios

Get a mix of 1–4 lines with different lengths, diameters and nozzles so every run feels like a new drill.

Pump & line pressures

Use the main pump discharge and each line’s pressure/valve to bring every line into the target range.

Real friction-loss intuition

See how changing length, diameter or nozzle affects required pressure, and train your instinct for “does this number look right?”.

Train in 60 seconds

  1. 1. Hit start and get a random scenario with 1–4 lines, each with its own setup.
  2. 2. Adjust the main discharge pressure and each line’s control until your lines are within tolerance.
  3. 3. Check your result, see which lines are off, and run it again for more reps.

What’s next for Pump Operator Tools?

Loss Trainer is just the beginning. Here’s what is planned next for pump operations training on the platform.

Next for Loss Trainer

  • Hard Mode: more complex multi-line setups, tighter tolerances and less hand-holding for experienced operators.
  • Challenge Mode: a sequence of quick scenarios you answer for score – perfect for drills and competitions.
  • Scenario sharing: generate a URL seed so instructors and departments can share identical scenarios.

Operations & Failures Trainer

Start the pump from idle, get water moving, then respond to randomly generated failures like cavitation, supply issues or sudden pressure changes. Train not just the math, but the troubleshooting.

Loss Calculator mobile companion

A mobile app where you can input your line setup and get the expected pump pressure. Use it as a quick reference in the field, aligned with the same logic as the Loss Trainer.

Frequently asked questions

How realistic is the Loss Trainer?

The Loss Trainer uses training values and formulas inspired by IFSTA and ENPQ material. It is designed as a teaching tool to practice friction-loss logic and pump pressures, and to complement—not replace—hands-on training on your actual apparatus.

How much does it cost?

Pump Operator Tools is offered on a subscription basis. A base subscription gives access to the Loss Trainer, and a full license will later unlock all modules on the platform as they are released. Your first subscription starts with a 3-day free trial so you can try it with your crew before committing.

Do I need an account to use it?

Yes. You need to log in to use the Loss Trainer. For now, the tool does not store or display your scores or training history, but an account is required to access the trainer.

What do I need to run Pump Operator Tools?

You need a modern web browser and an internet connection. The Loss Trainer works on both desktop and mobile devices, but you will generally get the best experience on a laptop or larger screen.
